Wait, We’re Insoluable

I wouldn’t call it an ah-ha moment, but after reading about skin... at a certain point.. it dawned on me that because our bodies are covered in layers of little shields (corneocytes) held together by a mix of protein and keratin filaments and covered in a waterproof goo, we’re kind of designed to be waterproof.

The body absorbs water, sure, but the benefits of absorbing water through the skin aren’t what we’ve been sold. Fingers soaked in warm water, for instance, don’t look plump, renewed, or glowy.

Is it possible that a hydrating skincare product is kind of not actually a thing?

According to science, the best way to treat dry skin is to prevent transepidermal waterless and the best way to prevent TEWL is to to boost your skin barrier’s ability to keep water in.
